Confessions of a Movie Lover

I’ve spent my professional life telling stories as a screenwriter, documentary filmmaker, author, journalist, and professor of screenwriting. But long before any of that, I was a movie lover.
Many of the reviews collected here began as short commentaries written for Silver Screen Radio, a public radio program featuring film professors sharing thoughtful reflections on movies they love.
I had one condition when I agreed to participate: I would not review new releases. Instead, I chose to write about films that had stayed with me, movies discovered and rediscovered over a lifetime of watching cinema from every era and genre.
Those brief radio pieces became the foundation for this archive. These reviews are personal reflections, written for fellow movie lovers.
I have a lot more to share about my lifelong love of movies and my devotion to the art of their creation, their beauty, their power. So stay tuned and come back for more reviews, more articles, more lists, more confessions.
